About PASA (Perfmed)
The Perfusionists Association of South Africa (PASA Perfmed) is a not-for-gain professional association dedicated to representing and promoting the interests of cardiovascular perfusionists working across both the private and public healthcare sectors in South Africa.

Our Mission and Commitment
Since its establishment in 1997, PASA Perfmed has remained steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of its members and, ultimately, the health and well-being of their patients. As outlined in our Constitution, we advocate for the professional development, recognition, and optimal working conditions of cardiovascular perfusionists, ensuring that they can provide the highest standard of patient care.
PASA Perfmed IPA currently represents the majority of practicing cardiovascular perfusionists in South Africa, with members actively working in both private healthcare institutions and government hospitals. Our members provide essential life-saving services in eight provinces across the country:
- Gauteng
- KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)
- Western Cape (WC)
- Eastern Cape (EC)
- Free State (FS)
- North West (NW)
- Mpumalanga
- Limpopo
Our objective is to strengthen the role of perfusionists within South Africa’s healthcare system by advocating for fair policies, professional growth opportunities, and industry-standard regulations. By doing so, we help our members practice optimally while contributing to enhanced patient care.
Industry Engagement and Recognition
To fulfill our purpose, PASA Perfmed actively collaborates with a diverse range of medical industry stakeholders, ensuring that the interests of cardiovascular perfusionists are recognized at all levels. Over the years, we have engaged with:
- The National Department of Health – Advocating for professional recognition, regulatory frameworks, and improved working conditions.
- Medical Funders & Administrators – Ensuring fair and equitable compensation structures for perfusionists.
- The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) – Supporting professional accreditation and adherence to ethical medical standards.
PASA Perfmed is also officially recognized by The Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of South Africa (SCTSSA), reinforcing our alignment with South Africa’s leading cardiac surgery professionals.
Additionally, we maintain a mutually beneficial partnership with the Cardiac Anesthetic Society of South Africa (CASSA), working together to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and improve surgical outcomes.
International Recognition
As part of our commitment to global standards in cardiovascular perfusion, PASA Perfmed has been affiliated with the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (EBCVP) since 2011. This affiliation enables our members to stay updated with international best practices, access continuing education opportunities, and expand their professional networks on a global scale.
